The driver card

The driver card is personal and necessary for driving vehicles under Regulation 3820/85. It has a white background and must be inserted by the driver of the vehicle before driving. It allows the following data to be recorded: travel/stop times, speed, distance, special events.

It is issued within 1 MONTH from the date of the application made to the Chamber of Commerce where the applicant is resident.

The applicant must meet the following requirements:

  • hold a valid driving licence in a category appropriate to the vehicle to be driven that is higher than B;
  • not be the holder of another driver tachograph card;
  • be resident in Italy.

The card has a memory capacity to store the driver's driving data for a period of 28 days. Its administrative validity is five years. To obtain its renewal, the holder must submit an application for renewal to the relevant Chamber of Commerce within 30 days prior to the expiry of the original card, and the new card will be produced within 15 working days of the application being submitted. In the event of theft, loss or malfunctioning of the card, the driver must submit a request for a replacement card within a maximum of 7 calendar days. The maximum time during which the driver may drive without a card is 15 calendar days; in such cases, the new card will be produced within 8 WORKING DAYS from the date on which the Chamber enters the request for a replacement card.
